Annual General Meeting  -  November 18, 2020

President’s Report

This has been a trying and difficult year all across the world, and our little world of Strathcona Curling Club is no exception.  We were forced to close in March with only 2 weeks left in our season.  And although we reopened as planned in October, we were forced to close again on Nov 13 because COVID cases are surging in Alberta.  At this time, we are unsure when we will be able to reopen as the current public health measures may well be extended past the initial 2 weeks.

Secretary Ruth Ball will give a full Membership Report, however, membership is down significantly this year due to COVID-19.  Membership drives everything in a curling club, especially our finances, as you will hear during Rick Mann’s financial report.  We have attempted to increase registrations by introducing new leagues and new styles of play, including: 1 on 1, doubles and triples.  So far these have not had a major impact.

Advertising and Promotion

We continued this year with our enhanced advertising and promotional activities where we put more and bigger ads in the Sher Pk News.  We have two 4x8 ft road signs, 1 on the Wye Road and 1 on Hwy 14, with changing signage to promote upcoming events.

We did not operate our weekend of free Try It Curling this year as we deemed it too risky. We continue to have Adult Learn to Curl on Wednesday evenings, which is fully subscribed, with great thanks to Gil and Linda Holm and Lorne Barker.

Treasurer Rick Mann will give a full Financial Report but we lost several advertisers and sponsors this year.  We always need your strong support for our fundraising and special events, and this is especially true this year.

Last year I warned that although we had achieved our goal of returning to Club to a positive operating balance, that our position was precarious.  COVID has tipped us over the edge and this year we will be back in the red.

The Chase -the-Ace and food store gift cards have a significant impact on our income.  Please continue to participate in these fundraisers.  The Christmas raffle is substantially richer this year due to several generous contributions.  You can purchase both food store gift cards and raffle tickets via email and e transfer.

Completed and Future Renovations

We continued to meet regularly during the year with the County Parks and Recreation Planners.  You will have noticed at the beginning of the season that there was work on the north and west side of the building.  This work was to improve the drainage around the building to prevent water from getting under the curling rink floor, and was the first part of a multi-year plan.  Test holes were drilled through the floor to determine the condition of the soil under the slab for the purpose of determining how much subsoil needed replacement.

The engineering design and architect drawings are currently underway for removal and replacement of the ice slab and subgrade materials, including the improvements to the mechanical systems and replacement walkways. These are scheduled for next spring, pending continued budget approval, and we expect to have a new ice slab for curling in the fall of 2021.  A 4th and final study is underway, which will include the entire Strathcona Olympiette Centre and what will be required to bring it up to current building codes and design parameters, including elevators, accessibility needs, washrooms, kitchens, etc.  Those renovations will proceed sometime in the future, and may be delayed depending upon the budget issues facing the County.

Our Club is place where we can all come and have fun curling. but it depends upon returning to a positive financial balance next year.   With your help and support we will get there.

Thank you
